Career Mapping and NZSkillsConnect

Career Mapping and NZSkillsConnect

The hospitality, travel, tourism and aviation industries offer a wide variety of job choices and career pathways.

The Career Maps and Pathways project aimed to assist these industries in attracting and retaining skilled people by providing a comprehensive database of all of the qualifications and training providers across the sectors and then linking these to job roles.

The project was a joint initiative between ATTTO and the Hospitality Standards Institute (HSI). It resulted in the development of a CD that was aimed at schools and teachers, providing guidance for career planning in these industries and pathways for achieving career goals.

Researching the sectors

The first phase of this project was a research phase, in which the job roles and career pathways were investigated and identified.

The information gathered was used to create a Career Map, which features prominently on the NZSkillsConnect website.

The Map describes the range of jobs available in these industries and links them into career pathways. It maps how career pathways move across the different sectors, making it easier for learners and job seekers to understand the transferability of their skills. It also shows what skills and training is needed to progress career prospects.

Developing NZSkillsConnect

The goal of the second phase was to make this information available to career seekers in an accessible, dynamic and user friendly way.

The resulting web portal – www.nzskillsconnect.co.nz - has been informed by and designed around an innovative, dynamic career search tool, the Visual Mapper.

As well as helping individuals identify possible career paths and associated training requirements, it provides a user-friendly and fun source of information and inspiration about career planning, training options, qualifications and working in our industries.

Resource for employers and employees

The web portal is part of ATTTO and HSI’s goals to attract, develop and retain skilled people in the workforce and, in turn, increase productivity.

Training providers who deliver ATTTO and HSI national qualifications or that embed a full national qualification within a local qualification for aviation, hospitality and tourism industries have registered their qualifications and profile details about their institution.

Employers can list job vacancies and register on the site to search for potential employees who have listed their CVs. Employers can profile their businesses as workplaces that offer on-job training aligned through ATTTO or HSI.
